Kelly Marcel is all about Venom. She wrote and produced the first two films, and not only will do the same for the third, but will direct it as well.
Deadline first reported that Marcel and actor Tom Hardy—who plays the lovable Eddie Brock and his symbiotic BFF/true love Venom—have broke the story for the third film, which Sony unsurprisingly greenlit after the first two killed at the box office.
Marcel has been involved with the Venom franchise from the very beginning. Although the first two films had different directors—Ruben Fleisher and Andy Serkis respectively—Marcel has produced and penned both scripts.
According to Deadline, she and Hardy have been working on the story for Venom 3 since early this year, and as that creative process evolved, “it became clear that it made sense for Marcel to take over directing duties as well.”
This will be Marcel’s first time directing a feature, though her industry experience as a writer began in 2013 working on the sci-fi show Terra Nova. Since then, she also penned the first Fifty Shades of Grey movie, Saving Mr. Banks—a movie where Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney—and was one of the writers credited with breaking the story for Disney’s live-action Cruella.
Venom 3 is still in the pre-production phase, so no news yet on when we’ll see Eddie and Venom on the big screen once again.
